Relay pricing

Initial thoughts

I think there should be two premium tiers for relay called Plus and Pro you could have a Max tier later more oriented toward businesses or super power users. I’m not sure but we would say the plus tier would be $10 a month or $100 a year. There should be a very generous discount for students yeah maybe free or maybe 50% off I’m not sure

So for pro it’s gonna be $30 a month or $300 a year and I don’t know more analytics and stuff but I haven’t even figured that out yet and then the other thing really is for teams and trying to figure out the team set up, which maybe is the more important one yeah I’m just not sure what I should be

Of course, when you have all the things for like marketing and forms and some of those advanced features and then you could charge more or have a Max plan or something if you wanted more built-in AI usage you could charge for that as well but I think I’d prefer people to use like the agents they have like if they have Claude or they have Codex or or open claw whatever that’s kind of what I would want for myself is to be able to mix a match in integrate. I don’t know maybe if you want a super easy out of the box system for those people just pay for it but I think most people now pay and subscribe to some kind of AI and so it’s just a layer on top of that subscription already paying for so it should provide value but be reasonably priced and so then AI usage can be up to whatever model they want

Second take

I realize that pricing is problematic because really Relay is multiple products in one

  • Productivity: People, Notes, & Tasks (individual and team)
  • Atlas Network: needs matching, mentor matching, search, possible 2 sided marketplace (public network)
  • Platform: build your own custom widget and share with the Relay ecosystem (App store? Roblox?)

Competitor landscape

Productivity

  • for productivity, about $10/mo is typical (goodnotes, even teams, todoist, notion, craft etc.)
    • however just for single productivity apps, its much cheaper, like Bear is just $30/yr, Things is $100 one time purchase (for all platforms) and GoodNotes has like $20/yr plans
  • Granola meeting notes is free (but you lose notes history, not really valid) $14/mo and $35/mo (enterprise security and admin) per user
  • Superlist is free (but very limited, more like a demo), $5/mo and $21/mo (adds more AI usage) per person, synced pro and team pricing
  • Happenstance is free or pro $24/mo and team is same as pro, per seat
  • Dex is premium $12/mo or pro $20/mo
    • Rolodex, their business offering is $29/mo per user
    • Dana, their meeting notes pivot or extension, is free for basic, Premium $8/mo (free for Dex users tho, so some bundling) or Professional $16/mo
  • Trello free up to 10 collaborators but limited boards, $5/mo unlimited boards, $10/mo add ai and more analytics, $17.50/mo add enterprise security. all of these are also per user for team plans
  • Loom has free for 25 videos, 5min rec limit, is $18/mo or $24/mo with AI auto enhancements for the videos, also per seat
  • Cap.so is $12/mo per user or a one time $58 for desktop app, but then no cloud
  • Cleanshot X is $29 onetime for desktop, and $8/mo per user for cloud
  • Capacities is free and still quite capable, and then Pro is $8/mo ads ai, task management, calendar integrations, extensions; they don’t have team features yet, its all individual product
  • then for team support or business apps like zendesk, pricing goes way up, $20/mo per agent, or as much as up to $169/mo per agent, plus all these $35/mo AI addons and such. its outrageous
  • For AI agents, we have $20/mo, $40/mo, $100/mo, $200/mo seen at Claude, ChatGPT, Manus, etc. They also have business pay by usage plans, or $20/mo per seat, as well as the general API pay per usage plans

Network

  • but for premium social networks, Reddit Premium or Quora Plus, that’s way too much, they charge $6/mo or $50/yr
    • however, they also have network effects or 2 sided marketplace, where creators are rewarded or paid for their work. so like good authors on quora get paid.
    • this is similar to publishing platforms like Medium, $50/yr which helps pay authors
    • different though than ghost, which has hosting and publishing, so then $15/mo or $30/mo
  • now for youtube, they can drive a lot of value, they have ads and then $8/mo or $80/yr for premium to hide those ads
    • and then of course pay out tons of money to high value creators, so there’s a marketplace, like Medium or Quora Plus
  • Stackoverflow public is free of course, private for businesses charges $6.50/mo per seat, but up to 250 members, after that closed enterprise pricing
    • then they have a model to license their data to AI training, so they can get paid on that
    • then they have an ad platform
    • Free utility → massive audience → monetize companies
    • Low friction, high trust, minimal ads

Platform

  • Roblox pays with virtual currency, kids pay to get dollars they can spend on games and skins and stuff, and creators receive that revenue directly, but Roblox gets a large cut (30% or higher)
    • they also have a subscription that gives certain bucks per month, actually not to unsimilar from AI usage subscriptions
    • also ads
    • brand partnerships
    • Entertainment → emotional engagement → monetize users directly
  • Apple App Store, $100/yr developer fee, then 30% cut

Conclusions

Relay Atlas Network: matching, marketplace, search

  • needs to be free, especially for students
  • rewards or payment for volunteers? but want to be relational not transactional
  • rewards for being trusted partners on the system?
  • pay to remove ads? have ads at all?

Relay Productivity

  • for individuals, I think $5/mo plan is actually the killer thing to hit instead of $10/mo, that feels a lot more affordable
  • for teams, do you have a flat rate for the team domain? like $30/mo and then just let people carry over their personal plan or let the org pay their personal plan at $5/mo per seat? Or try to have a business per seat plan? but then like what about small teams of 5 who want something free like i can get Linear or Shortcut for free? Linear goes to $10/mo per seat and $16/mo per seat which unlocks more features, billed yearly, Shortcut similar (little cheaper)
  • most of these products have the pro pricing the same as the per seat team pricing, which makes sense
  • so simpler thing probably just require a paid user to setup an organization, that also helps validate the org is real,
    • so then no extra flat rate for the org, although, then how many orgs can I make? unlimited?
    • so teammates collaborators need to also be paying members, but the org can centralize billing and essentially gift the sub to the person
    • guests can be free users, or collaborators with limited features

Relay platform

  • I dunno yet
